Small molecule-based chromogenic and fluorogenic probes play an indispensable role in many sensing applications. Ideal optical chemosensors should provide selectivity sensitivity towards a variety of analytes. Synthetic accessibility attractive photophysical properties have made squaraine dyes enticing platform for the development chemosensors. This review highlights versatility modular assemblies squaraine-based chemodosimeters that take advantage availability various structurally functionally diverse recognition motifs, as well utilizing additional capabilities due to unique structural features ring.
